My wife and I tried the Rock Bridge Road entrance for the first time this weekend and hiked the Turkey Knob Trail. When we were rounding a bend near the powerline, we saw our first bear in the wild as it was running up the trail away from us. We decided to head back to the car, since we didn't know if it might have been a mother with cubs. We then drove to the end of Rock Bridge Road and hiked the trails there.

How common are bear sightings in Panthertown; and should one have more concern for bears here than in Dupont Forest, for example?

I couldn't find any information on the internet regarding the trails. When I got to Silva I found a National Geographic map on Panthertown, so I bought it. It was inaccurate and I got lost. Indicated trails where there were none. Had trail names but not trail numbers. Is not accurate. Do not buy it.

This is an incredibly good blog about your group and your mission. I can remember when we still owned the camping and backpacking store "Venture Out" that some of our fastest selling topo maps were for Panthertown. I can't join you tomorrow but wish you great success doing your maintenance and hope to join you another time. I also have a blog which I'll be happy to promote your group and include a link to your site in the hopes of attracting more volunteers.

Hello,
Are the trail designations shown on the map on this page still accurate? Was considering a visit and wanted to make sure of what I could ride.
Thx,

I am planning a trip to NC in June and I would like go backpacking. I have ordered Burt Kornagay's book as a guide but I would love suggestions of good 3 day, 8-10 mile per day, backpacking trip. I am in good shape and am an experienced hiker/backpacker. I would like to get off the beaten path and stay away from horses if possible. I am not afraid of hills and map and compass work. Does anyone have any suggestions of places to go or that I should not miss? Thanks for your help.

Thank you to everyone who came out and helped maintain the Blackrock and Overlook Trails in Panthertown this past weekend. The Friends of Panthertown Valley relies on volunteers to do what we do. It was certainly great to meet and have some new volunteers on the trails with us!

With the help of dedicated volunteers, Friends of Panthertown added several new water-bars on the Blackrock and Overlook Trails in Panthertown Valley, and cleaned and cleared all the older ones.

Here are some photos from the Trail Work Day:
