The mission of Friends of Panthertown is to work in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service to conserve Panthertown as a backcountry natural resource and to enable sustainable recreation.

Our volunteers maintain 30 miles of public trails in this treasured backcountry recreation area located on Nantahala National Forest in Western North Carolina.

You can become a Friend by donating in support of our conservation and stewardship work in Panthertown Valley.

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowable by law.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission has proposed a rule change to allow bear hunting by permit in the Panthertown-Bonas Defeat Bear Sanctuary. NCWRC estimates that 521 permits will be issued for this sanctuary in 2022 at a cost of $8 each.

We smile for trails with dirt on our faces as we continue sweetening up the next section Wilderness Falls!

Recreate Responsibly

🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳

Sprucing up the route to the ever popular Schoolhouse Falls. The weekend Stew Crew cleaned up the giant Tropical Storm Fred sand deposit on the Boardwalk, removed hundreds of tripping and slipping roots, and vastly improved water drainage alongside the Panthertown Valley Trail.

Rotten steps and rebar begone! Today’s Stew Crew hiked in about as far as you can get from the trailhead. We dug out the old and put in the new on the Macs Gaps side of Little Green Trail. Thank you volunteers for all your hard work on this gorgeous and perfectly cool day!

Reveling in the photos of the AMAZING Sustainable Trails Training! What an eye opening program week with trails champion and local expert, Tim Johnson. Local land managers, trail maintainers and builders, and volunteers from across the forest are sharing strategies and soaking in the scientific knowledge for sweetening our local trail experiences!

Part time, 20 hrs. week, six month contract, $15 hr., work from home and in the forest!

Fall in Panthertown Valley, where witch hazel flowers, wintergreen puts out berries, and where Stew Crew volunteers walk the trails, assessing and maintaining the routes that take us to our most beloved places. We laugh and learn from one another while giving to the land and helping sweeten the experience for future forest visitors ✨🌳🥾⚒️

It’s always breathtaking from Tranquility Point, and especially in the Fall!

When you see it at the trailhead parking lot or on the back of someone’s pack, the Unity Blaze is symbol of inclusion and a message of treating everyone, everywhere, equally. 🔥 🪵

Worked on wayfinding up atop Little Green! It’s starting to looks like fall at higher elevations.
