Celebrate National Trails Day with Friends of Panthertown at the Salt Rock trailhead entrance to Panthertown Valley in Cashiers, North Carolina.

Hike, bike, run, and play on the trails all day. At noon, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony for the recently acquired land next to the Salt Rock trailhead.

Enjoy live bluegrass music by local musicians Pinnacle Ridge, bring a picnic or enjoy delicious food from award-winning Mojo Kitchen & Lounge food truck (winner of Best Food Truck in Asheville competition), bid on silent auction items, and enter to win a YETI Hopper 40 cooler donated by Zoller Hardware.

Family friendly, children are welcome! There will be kid’s activities on hand, guided hikes, plus lots of self-guided exploring for the whole family to do.

You will have plenty of time to check out the newly protected 16-acre property, scope out your future campsites or hammock spots, or explore a short path up to the top of the ridge. It’s sure to be a day filled with adventure and celebration.

Parking will be extremely limited along the 1/4 mile U.S. Forest Service gravel road leading to the Salt Rock trailhead. We strongly suggest carpooling, sharing a ride, and arriving early.

The Salt Rock entrance to Panthertown is located at the end of Breedlove Road in Cashiers. For more info please send an e-mail or call (828) 269-HIKE (4453).

Event sponsors include Chinquapin, Hampton Inn & Suites, Landmark Realty Group, McKee Properties, Sonrise Sanitation, and Zoller Hardware. Special thanks to Mainspring Conservation Trust and the U.S. Forest Service Nantahala Ranger District.

Project Update (Wednesday, April 26):

Tree Work

Ground work continues at the Salt Rock Gap trailhead entrance to Panthertown.

In preparation for improved trail access and camping opportunities, and improved public access through development of a designated parking area, we removed dangerous dead standing trees along the roadway and selectively cut some of the white pines adjacent to the entrance gate.
As work progresses, we will add dirt and gravel to a small portion of the the newly acquired 16-acre property, and smooth out sections of the entrance road.
Visitor and worker safety is our primary concern during this important conservation work. Expect some entrance road congestion and temporary delays while the work continues on weekdays through May.

Feel free to contact us with any questions. Thank you.
